Hello! My name is Joshua Ross. I am from Pottstown, PA. I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering at Drexel University! My goal is to graduate with a BS/MS degree in Mechanical Engineering by the year 2024. I enjoy playing Squash or exploring the city in my free time with friends. Also, I play Euphonium with the concert band on campus. I am seeking an internship in the field of Mechanical Engineering that offers challenging and fulfilling work with any discipline to gain more experience!

Hi, I'm Jonathan Zdybel. I am from Northern Burlington, NJ. I'm majoring in electrical engineering and I hope to graduate with a BS/MS. I am on the track team, I enjoy running, going on hikes and hanging out with friends. I am excited to take part in this animatronics project, building new skills and practicing engineering principles.

Llewelyn Sannajust: CAD Designer

Hello! My name is Llewelyn Sannajust and I am from Villanova, PA. I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Drexel and I hope to graduate with a BS/MS. At Drexel, I like to involve myself in clubs such as Formula E and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASCE). I also am a national representative on Drexel's collegiate figure skating team. In my free time I enjoy playing guitar and squash. Through my expedites at internships and at school, I hope to improve my abilities as a future innovator and create useful devices for people in need.

Zachary Chin: Lead Builder

My name is Zachary Chin. I am from Monroe, CT. I am currently a student at Drexel University and my major is Mechanical Engineering and I am planning on entering the robotics and automation focus.

MEET R2-D2

OUR STORY

Our group has come together to design an animatronic replica of R2-D2 from the famous movie franchise known as Star Wars. Our group grew up loving the films. From this project, we plan to display our knowledge of the engineering design process and effectively work as a team to show employers of our beginning engineering career ambitions.

OUR VISION

Our plan is to design and construct a model that fits inside a 2-foot cube. The model is envisioned to move forward and backward and spin its head with synchronous blinking led lights.

OUR DESIGN

From this project, our group plans to produce a physical model, a CAD draft up of the model, arduino programs, and test reports. The physical model will be our finished model. No prototypes will be created due to financial constraints. The finished model will have a plastic frame and shell which is relatively expensive to create with the 3D printer. The arduino programs are going to be used to carry out the functions of the device.

Weekly Updates

Check out our pictures under the pictures tab!

Week 1:

The team met for the first time on zoom, we decided to use Wix to create our website. We then collaborated to create the base of our website by giving all members admin to the site. We also started to brainstorm design ideas. The predominant idea is to create an R2D2 model, other ideas that were brought up were the crab from crab rave, and Mike Wazowski from monsters inc.

Josh: Created a list of different characters to pursue and later organized the website.

Zac: Took on the role of the team builder and created the website

Llewelyn: Helped break the list of project ideas down

Jonathan: Discussed strategies on how to accomplish the main contender ideas.

Week 2:

We met after class on Monday to discuss pro's and con's of building each type of robot, finally, we decide to build R2-D2 believing it would be the easier and most cost-efficient design to produce. After the decision, we started creating the design proposal in Word Docs uploading a template, In the proposal, we had to gather a lot of information about how we will design the robot, how we're going to pay for it and why are we doing this.

Josh: Worked on the Proposal and helped organize the overall goals and possible obstacles in the way

Zac: Worked on the Proposal, worked on the website and helped develop a plan/timeline for moving forward.

Llewelyn: Worked on the Proposal and formulated a Budget

Jonathan: Worked on the Proposal and gave suggestions for other movements of the R2-D2 model

Week 3:

After class, we split into three groups, each group was assigned one part of the R2-D2 unit to design for the machine sketch, these three parts being the head, the body, and the arms. We discussed what dimensions to use and came to a conclusion on where each mechanism will go. Utilizing three types of software we created the design sketches using AutoCAD, Solidworks and by hand, drawing the proposed structure.

Josh: Became familiar with AutoCAD, worked on machine sketch for the body

Zac: Worked on machine sketch for the head.

Llewelyn: Discussed implementing the arms, worked on machine sketch for the arms.

Jonathan: Updated website, worked on machine sketch for the body.

Week 4:

We started ordering supplies to be used by the 3D printer to create a model along with supplies such as motors and circuits for functionality. Did research on pseudocode and started that assignment creating an accurate representation of the functions that R2 will carry out.

Josh: Gave the website a new look, uploaded pictures

Zac: Began ordering supplies, started 3D printing a model of the combined designs

Llewelyn: Updated website, worked on pseudocode

Jonathan: Updated website, worked on pseudocode, began working on LEDs

Week 5:

We started discussing and preparing for the midterm, first we followed the rubric and created a presentation that showed the progress of the robot while highlighting what we have done and learned, then we started brainstorming to create a general script for the oral portion.

Josh: Worked on the presentation,

Zac: Began 3D printing process, assembly of motors

Llewelyn: Finalized AutoCAD models, assembly of motors

Jonathan: Worked on the presentation, updated website

Week 6:

The team started working on how to control the motors and how to mount them into the design. Along the way, we started 3D printing other aspects to the project such as the legs and feet. In the pictures section, a picture of the foot with a mounted motor can be found.

Josh: Worked on controlling the stepper motor

Zac: Continued 3D printing and assembling motors to the feet

Llewelyn: Worked on controlling the servo motors

Jonathan: Worked on the presentation, updated website, worked on LEDs

Week 7:

Began assembly of motors, putting together various part's to build the exterior. Testing the motor's trying to connect them has lead to some problems since it seems the ports are dead and so far trying to connect the motors to the power supply has been difficult. Continued working on the draft final report.

Josh: Worked on controlling the stepper motor, draft final report

Zac: Continued 3D printing and assembling motors to the feet, draft final report

Llewelyn: Worked on controlling the servo motors, draft final report

Jonathan: Worked on the draft final report, updated website

Week 8:

Continuation of assembly of motors and exterior, planning on how to fit wires and the other machinery into the robot and how everything is going to be fixed and strapped into place

Josh: Worked on the stepper motor

Zac: Continued 3D printing and assembly

Llewelyn: Planning

Jonathan: Updated website

Week 9:

Completion of assembly of motors and exterior, fit wires and the other machinery into the robot and  secured Arduino and battery packs

Josh: Worked on the stepper motor

Zac: Finished assembly, electronics and uploaded all files to the 3D printing page

Llewelyn: Planning

Jonathan: Updated website
